Breaking News: Tragedy Strikes as Massive Fire Engulfs Market in Central Manila — Many Feared Dead

Published: 5 minutes ago

Manila, Philippines — A devastating fire broke out at the Divisoria Night Market in Central Manila late Sunday evening, killing at least 27 people and injuring dozens more, according to initial reports from the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO). The fire, which began at approximately 8:45 PM local time, quickly spread across several stalls and nearby structures, leaving behind a scene of chaos, destruction, and loss.

Witnesses Describe Scene of Horror

Eyewitnesses described the incident as “hellish” and “like something out of a nightmare.” Vendors and shoppers, many of whom were families and young children, were caught off-guard as flames erupted from a cluster of food stalls near the center of the market. The fire spread rapidly, fueled by cooking gas tanks, flammable plastic covers, and closely packed wooden kiosks.

“I heard a loud explosion and then saw flames everywhere,” said Michelle Santos, a vendor who managed to escape with minor burns. “People were screaming and running. Some were trapped inside the maze of stalls.”

Immediate Emergency Response

Firefighters arrived on the scene within 10 minutes, but by then, the blaze had already consumed a large portion of the market. The narrow layout of the area and the congestion of stalls made it difficult for fire trucks to access the heart of the fire.

“We deployed over 25 fire engines and more than 100 personnel,” said Chief Inspector Roland Mendez of the Bureau of Fire Protection. “Our teams are still working to contain the remaining flames and search for survivors.”

As of the latest update, the fire has been reduced to “manageable levels,” though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Dozens Hospitalized, Search for Missing Continues

Hospitals across the city are treating at least 42 people for injuries ranging from burns and smoke inhalation to blunt force trauma sustained during the stampede to escape. Several victims remain in critical condition.

Authorities have confirmed that many of the deceased were vendors who stayed behind to save their goods or help others. Among those confirmed dead are three children and an elderly woman, according to the Manila Police District.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has also joined the probe, citing the possibility of foul play. Reports have emerged that a small argument between vendors preceded the fire, but this remains unverified.

President Marcos Issues Statement

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued a statement just minutes ago, expressing his condolences to the families affected by the incident and pledging immediate assistance.

“My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. We are mobilizing all available resources to ensure survivors are cared for and the truth behind this tragedy is uncovered,” the statement read.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has already dispatched emergency food packs and temporary shelters for displaced families.

Manila Mayor Declares State of Calamity

In response to the scale of the disaster, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna has declared a state of calamity in the affected district, unlocking emergency funds and allowing for quicker deployment of relief and recovery efforts.

“This is one of the most devastating fires we’ve seen in years,” the mayor said during a press briefing. “We will ensure that every victim receives the support they need.”

Social Media Flooded with Reactions

As news of the fire broke, social media was inundated with photos, videos, and calls for help. Many users criticized the slow fire safety measures in the area and questioned why emergency exits were blocked or unavailable.

The hashtag #DivisoriaFire is now trending on X (formerly Twitter), with netizens demanding accountability and reform of urban safety regulations.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are now focusing on determining the cause of the fire. While an electrical short circuit has not been ruled out, some initial reports suggest the blaze may have started due to a leaking LPG tank.

Investigators are combing through CCTV footage and speaking with witnesses in a bid to determine how this tragic incident unfolded.
